Hemlock

Some would say,

the danger portends

Some would say,

it all is pretend

Some would say,

the past wears a shroud

Some would say,

the quiet is loud

Some would say,

all love is for fools

Some would say,

to break every rule

Some would say,

today is unsure

Some would say,

tomorrow the cure

Some would say,

the hammer is cocked

Some would say,

the target is locked

Some would say,

the reasons persist

Some would say,

all logic resists

Some would say,

the lies are astute

Some would say,

more voices to mute

Some would say,

the weight is too much

Some would say,

to look but don’t touch

Some would say,

their talk cheap and vile

Some would say

—death kills with a smile

Dark Ivory Tower

Hey Academic,

throw me some facts

Explain to me clearly

each thought you attack

Dear Intellectual,

restate and rephrase

Your version of truth,

empty words in the fray

Hello Professor,

is the poison pill done

Refilled with your venom

to spread to the young

And lastly the Critic

who stands by the wall,

Humpty Dumpty awaiting

your push to then fall

While open minds sit

in the cold and the rain,

Your cowardly torrents

bring nothing but pain

To all those so cloistered,

divorced from what’s real

Perdition your tenure

—inflamed to repeal

Unbetrothed

Religion and science…

never to wed

Like oil and water,

alone in their beds

While science defends,

ancient dogma portends

Two voices discordant,

to break if they bend

For centuries long

they have fought tooth and nail

Refusing to budge

out of fear that entails

A false understanding,

bells call from within

Where marriage awaits

—espoused unto Him

Counting Crows

Sometimes money isn’t enough,

the wheat rejects the chaff

Wealth attained by winnowing gain,

the scarecrow only laughs

Sometimes money isn’t enough,

the numbers rise and fall

Interest accrues as attrition renews

—the richest count forestalled
